Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30360

After an extremely long break, I'm back with one of the more well-known Peachtrees in Atlanta. Technically, I don't think any part of Peachtree Industrial Blvd is in the city, but it starts just inside the perimeter and goes northeast up to Sugar Hill, GA. I only covered the southern end this time.

An unique aspect of this Peachtree is that part of it is a freeway.

If you want to buy a car, just about every make has a dealer on this road.

There's also a castle! Or not. Really, Hilton, please exert a little more effort next time.

New Peachtree Rd NE, Chamblee, GA 30341

Oh, finally. I got to an interesting one.This street is in the northeastern town of Chamblee, known for Buford Hwy where all the authentic ethnic restaurants are. In fact, on New Peachtree, there's one of the first Chinese shopping centers. In Atlanta, Chinatown isn't made up of city blocks like New York City or San Francisco. We have strip malls lining up and down Buford Hwy and offshoot streets.

But this isn't about Buford Hwy, so lemme shut up about that. But we can start with one of the aforementioned strip malls on New Peachtree:

Unlike past sarcastic encouragement, I really do recommend seeing this part of Atlanta:

Peachtree Park Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

I forgot that we had taken photos of this street months ago when we were young and foolish. Now that our time has passed and our innocence lost, I have no idea what to say about this street except that it's really close to other Peachtrees which makes it even more forgettable than I thought possible. I think there were eclectic furniture shops, a complex belonging to a church and apartment buildings. Please please don't ask me to say any more about this one.

Why you'd want to see for yourself, I don't know, but please don't share your reason with me.

Peachtree St, Porterdale, GA 30014

It may seem like I'm half-assing this project by choosing the shortest streets ever built, but that's not completely true. It's half true because I'm supremely lazy, but the other part of it is that I was near Porterdale last week and this amazing proximity will probably not happen again in my lifetime. So yes, tiny forgotten Porterdale, GA has a Peachtree Street and hold on, folks, it's actually interesting.

The town surrounds this huge complex of buildings that make up the Specialty Yarn and Converting factory. This is right on the railroad line. In days of yore, I imagine Porterdale was a big deal, but it's 2010 and based on the condition of all the houses in the area, they're not on anyone's radar anymore.

The factory still looks like it's operating…

…but the rundown shacks all around it scream minimum wage.

Porterdale actually looks like an interesting photo shoot on its own which I may do someday. If you want to step back in time without a DeLorean, go here:

East Peachtree St, Austell, GA 30106

Yes! This is THE Peachtree Street…that's not in Atlanta. It's in Austell, a town you probably don't need to concern yourself with.

This is the whole fricking street. Seriously, if any of these streets named Peachtree get any shorter and boring-er than this, I give up.

Peachtree Valley Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30309

I started with the shortest Peachtree street I could find. This is pretty much the entire road.

A closed TGI Fridays restaurant is probably the best known landmark of this street. Yes, that's how exciting this one was.

There's also the Shepherd Center across the street, but it's not on Peachtree Valley. As you can see, it runs into Peachtree Road, which isn't the famous Peachtree Street. We'll get to all that later, I promise/threaten.

No, not all streets in Atlanta are named Peachtree

Only 71 of them are… And when I say Atlanta, it's not just the city, but the 20-county metro area. Surprisingly, or lazily, this list only includes streets in six of these counties. But it's more than enough because I'm using it as the basis of a new photography project called "Peachtree Streets". Oooooo, orginal, yet not.

For clarity and maybe credibility, the number 71 is the official 2007 tally that comes from the Atlanta Regional Commission. Big thanks to David Giguere for compiling it and also sharing it with me when I threatened/requested help.

So this project started with the following oft-asked, oft-unanswered questions:

"Are people exaggerating when they say all the streets in Atlanta are called Peachtree?"
"No? Well, where are they?"
"And can I really make money working from home?"

I'm attempting in my normal, mis-guided but well-intentioned fashion to answer those questions and others that you would rather me not ask. I'm not good with taking hints, but I welcome grammatically-correct emails letting me know about any obscure Peachtree named street that I might not be aware of. My email address is over there on the left.

I plan on photographing all 71 streets, but I'm not sure how long it'll take. I usually finish what I start so check back regularly and maybe I'll can show you a side of Atlanta you've heard about, but never really cared to discover.

By the way, I haven't started yet. This post is supposed to spur me to action.
